What is the Abitur?

The German International Abitur (Deutsches Internationales Abitur - DIA) is an academic certification recognized by the Federal Republic of Germany that certifies an outstanding school education and grants access to German universities and to higher education institutions in numerous countries.

At the Alexander von Humboldt German-Peruvian School, the program is delivered in accordance with the standards established by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of Germany (KMK) for German Schools Abroad, ensuring a rigorous, international and high-quality education.

The exams are held in coordination with the German Schools of Guatemala, La Paz and San José, which belong to the same educational region.

The team provides ongoing guidance on the organization of the program, the choice of subjects, the academic requirements and the conduct of the exams, in addition to maintaining constant coordination with the German educational authorities and the schools of the region.

Preparation phase
- The preparation phase corresponds to grade 4 of secondary school (DAM) and constitutes the first year of the German Abitur. During this stage, students consolidate the competencies and knowledge needed to successfully undertake the qualification phase. In addition to the compulsory subjects, they choose certain subjects that they will continue throughout the program and that will form part of their final assessment.

Qualification phase
- The qualification phase comprises grades 11 and 12, organized into four academic semesters. During this period, all subjects are assessed using the German system of 0 to 15 points, whose results, together with the final exams, make up the definitive grade of the German Abitur. This stage strengthens autonomy, research, critical thinking and the competencies needed to undertake high-level university studies.
- Upon completing grade 12, students sit five final Abitur exams: three written exams and two oral exams. The subject of German is compulsorily the first written exam. The remaining subjects are selected respecting the distribution among the three major fields of the German curriculum: Language and Literature, Social Sciences, and Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
- One of the oral exams takes place through an academic presentation and interview, while the second consists of a colloquium based on a project previously developed by the student, in which they demonstrate their capacity for research, analysis, argumentation and communication.

Access to universities

The German International Abitur opens the doors to universities in Germany and in numerous countries, thanks to the international recognition of the diploma. Many of our alumni choose to continue their university studies in Germany.

The education received through the German Abitur develops the academic, methodological and personal competencies needed to successfully face the challenges of higher education and of an increasingly globalized world.
